Scalable parallel formulations of the Barnes-Hut method for n-body simulations

چکیده
In this paper, we present two new parallel formulations of the Barnes-Hut method. These parallel formulations are especially suited for simulations with irregular particle densities. We rst present a parallel formulation that uses a static partitioning of the domain and assignment of subdomains to processors. We demonstrate that this scheme delivers acceptable load balance, and coupled with two collective communication operations, it yields good performance. We present a second parallel formulation which combines static decomposition of the domain with an assignment of subdomains to processors based on Mor-ton ordering. This alleviates the load imbalance inherent in the rst scheme. The second parallel formulation is inspired by two currently best known parallel algorithms for the Barnes-Hut method. We present an experimental evaluation of these schemes on a 256 processor nCUBE2 parallel computer for an astrophysical simulation.

N-Body Simulations Using Message Passsing Parallel Computers
In this paper, we present new parallel formulations of the Barnes-Hut method for n-body simulations on message passing computers. These parallel formulations partition the domain eeciently incurring minimal communication overhead. This is in contrast to existing schemes that are based on sorting a large number of keys or on the use of global data structures. The new formulations are augmented b...

This paper presents a data{parallel formulation for N?body simulations using the Barnes-Hut method. The tree-structured problem is rst linearized by using space{{lling curves. This process allows us to use standard data distributions and parallel array operations available in data-parallel languages. A new eecient HPF implementation of the Barnes-Hut method is presented in this paper, character...

Hierarchical N-body methods, which are based on a fundamental insight into the nature of many physical processes, are increasingly being used to solve large-scale problems in a variety of scientific/engineering domains. Applications that use these methods are challenging to parallelize effectively, however, owing to their nonuniform, dynamically changing characteristics and their need for long-...
متن کاملProvably Good Partitioning and Load Balancing Algorithms for Parallel Adaptive N-Body Simulation
We present an efficient and provably good partitioning and load balancing algorithm for parallel adaptive N-body simulation. The main ingredient of our method is a novel geometric characterization of a class of communication graphs that can be used to support hierarchical N-body methods such as the fast multipole method (FMM) and the Barnes–Hut method (BH). We show that communication graphs of ...
